On Friday 8th May the Law Faculty of VU University Amsterdam organizes an expert seminar with the title “Hate Speech in Fragile Contexts II: Law, Language and Metaphors”. Special guest of the seminar is professor Richard Wilson, Professor of Anthropology and Law and Director of the Human Rights Institute at the University of Connecticut. A central topic of this seminar comes close to some of the key interests of the faculties’s Boundaries of Law research program: what are the boundaries of legal language when deciding on the criminality of speech?
In the morning session there will be presentations on current research around hate speech, law and language, by Marloes van Noorloos, Sofia Stolk and Ulad Belavusau. In the afternoon, professor Richard Wilson will present a paper on ‘Metaphors of Causation in International Speech Crimes Trials’. Wilson’s paper will be followed by three commentaries of distinguished experts in the field of rhetoric and the law: Ineke Sluiter, professor of Greek language and Literature at Leiden University and VU University professors Wouter Werner and Bart van Klink.
The seminar starts on 8th May 2015 at 10.00 at the Church Room 16A00 (16th floor), Main building VU University Amsterdam (De Boelelaan 1105). If you would like to attend (part of) the seminar, please send an e-mail for registration to Wouter Veraart: w.j.veraart@vu.nl. For more information, please visit the website.
