The Dutch Research School of Philosophy (OZSW) has introduced a new type of membership, namely associate membership. The costs for becoming an associate member are €50/year. The difference with regular membership is that PhD students supervised by an associate member cannot join the OZSW.
The OZSW especially welcomes philosophers working outside the Dutch philosophy faculties/departments to become an associate member – for example medical ethicists working at university medical centres, philosophers of law working at law schools and so on.
Regular membership is free for employees of the 11 founding faculties of the OZSW, but costs either €225 or €450 per year for philosophers working at other faculties. This amount is easily earned back by regular members who supervise PhD students, as their PhD students can get a free membership and follow OZSW courses/schools for free or against a discount. However, the regular membership fee turned out to be a financial barrier for philosophers who do not supervise PhD students. The new membership category is meant to take away this barrier.
